Summary

The Riverdale project is a highly energy-efficient, and healthy duplex located in the downtown residential core of Edmonton, Alberta. The Riverdale project’s aim is to create housing that produces as much energy — or more — than the home will consume, while enhancing occupant health and comfort.

Description

The goal of the Riverdale NetZero Project is to prove that it is possible to build housing that offers an exceptional quality of life for the homeowners while also dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and the overall impact on the environment.

The uplex uses an electricity producing photovoltaic array, a solar hot water heating system, and passive solar gains to produce as much renewable energy as it needs to heat, light and operate each of the homes. The units are very well insulated with R-values at least double the building code minimums. The building envelope is also very tightly air sealed, allowing the project to achieve very low air leakages in the range of 0.5 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals.

In addition, to conserve resources and reduce waste, the duplex is built using, to the fullest extent possible, materials that are regionally-produced (e.g. lumber and recycled newspaper).

Located in the heart of one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities, the Riverdale NetZero Project has the potential to reach a wide range of professional builders and potential homeowners. In the process, it will play a key role in helping to shape a more energy-efficient future for all Canadians.
